We are fed up: politico-ecological coalitions for food

Abstract

Considering the politicization of food, the article inquiries about the power of food to intermediate new political alliances. In dialogue with theories of gender and environment, I suggest the concept of political-ecological coalitions to analyze the protest Wir haben es satt! (We are fed up) that takes place since 2011 once a year in Germany to denounce the agri-food industrial model. Based on a rich description of the march and on a qualitative analysis of text and images, I argue that the power of this political-ecological coalition lies in articulating various forms of injustice present at the agri-food industrial model, crossing identity, categorial, geographical and spatial borders, and to defend that diversity is their strength.
