In what ways can ethnographic analysis of border regimes address the disintegration of the European project in the face of attacks from the right? This commentary on Bernd Kasparek's contribution to this topic discusses how European border regime analysis can be situated within social and cultural anthropology, and how it can be reoriented in times of a shift to the right. In doing so, Kasparek addresses practical and ethical research questions, particularly when dealing with reluctant or unwelcome others, and with complex border regimes within and outside Europe. Kasparek also considers strategies and visions for ethnographic border regime analysis and critical migration research, contrasting them with right-wing migration policies.
